Get Started
GETev is an API that will return the Electric Vehicle (EV) status of any UK registered vehicle.
An Electric Vehicle (as defined by the DVLA) is one that is powered purely by battery and has zero tailpipe emissions. Hybrid vehicles which run on a combination of battery and fossil fuels are not regarded as EVs by the DVLA or this service.
To use the API, make an HTTPS GET request to api.getev.uk with the Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) appended to the URL like this:
curl https://api.getev.uk/VRN
The VRN is not case sensitive and it must not include any spaces between letters/numbers.
Responses are in JSON format.
Here are some example JSON responses.
Successful request, the vehcle is an EV:
{
"success": true,
"registrationNumber": "XX11ABC",
"isEV": true
}
Successful request, the vehcle is not an EV:
{
"success": true,
"registrationNumber": "AA11ABC",
"isEV": false
}
Unsuccessful request, the VRN format was invalid:
{
"success": false,
"registrationNumber": "AA12AB",
"error": "Invalid VRN Format"
}
Along with the JSON response, you will receive an HTTP status code response. Here are the possible HTTP statuses that you'll receive from the service and their meaning.
| Status Code | Meaning | Success? |
|---|---|---|
| 200 | Your request was successful. The supplied VRN was valid and the vehicle EV status has been returned to you. | true |
| 404 | Vehicle could not be found. The supplied VRN format was valid but it did not belong to any vehicle. | true |
| 400 | The format of the supplied VRN was invalid. It was not a valid UK number plate. | false |
| 429 | The service is busy, please try your request again | false |
| 401 | Unauthorised. You need to register for an auth key, probably because your IP address has made too many requests. | false |
| 500 | Unknown server side error, please try your request again or contact support if the issue persists. | false |
Authentication Header
For private use you do not normally need to add any additional headers to your HTTP requests. However, if you intend to make >25 requests per day or use GETev for commercial purposes, then you need to first register and then add the supplied authentication key to all your HTTP GET requests.
To do this, add an AUTHORIZATION header to the HTTP request and then add your Auth Key. Using CURL it will look like this:
curl -H "Authorization: YOUR_AUTH_KEY" https://api.getev.uk/VRN
If you make >25 requests per day without registering or not supplying your auth key, you could be temporarily blocked from using this service.
